Google Is Becoming Part of the Brand Funnel

Reviewed 30 September 2026

A customer can form a substantial impression of a business before visiting its website.

Search results can contain reviews, images, business information, video, product information, snippets, AI-generated summaries and references to third-party opinions. Preferred Sources and Search profiles add further ways for brands and publishers to be represented inside Google.

This means Google is not only a traffic source. It is part of the environment in which brand perception is formed.

Traditional digital marketing often imagines a simple funnel: Google creates discovery, the website delivers the brand experience, and the customer converts. In reality, a significant part of consideration can happen before the website visit.

That creates both opportunity and loss of control.

A business can gain visibility across multiple Google surfaces and influence customers earlier. But the presentation is mediated by a platform. The organisation does not fully control which reviews, extracts, images or comparisons appear around it.

AI Search intensifies this issue because information from multiple sources can be synthesised into a single response. A prospective customer may encounter a description of the brand before encountering the brand’s own copy.

The marketing response should therefore extend beyond ranking individual pages. Businesses need consistency across their website, structured information, public profiles, reviews, third-party coverage and the broader evidence available about them online.

This is not about attempting to control every mention. It is about recognising that brand experience is distributed.

The strongest brands will still create reasons for people to seek out their owned properties directly. But they should also understand how they appear in environments they do not own.

Google becoming part of the brand funnel does not make the website less important. It makes the transition from platform perception to owned experience more important.
